• Skull Fracture. When a person hits their head hard enough, their skull can fracture. Depending on the situation, the fracture could further injure the brain, or it could leave the brain exposed and susceptible to more direct damage, which can be life-ending.
• Penetration. When an object pierces the skull and enters the brain, it is considered a penetration injury. This is the most serious brain injury because it usually ends in permanent disability or death because it severely damages brain tissue and changes brain function.

While these are all signs that a person might have a brain injury, sometimes it is helpful to bring a person to the hospital for evaluation even if they aren’t showing signs of a brain injury after a blow to the head.
